Bern Posters: From Bear Illustrations to Images of the Aare
Growing up in Bern means that every morning on the way to school, the bear looks you straight in the eye, and the Aare River waits until you’re old enough. Once I was finally old enough, as the inventor and designer of the Aare Guru app, I eventually stopped referring to swimming as a hobby—it’s simply part of my job.
The bear illustration and the Aare River image are part of my tribute to Bern. My Bern posters are for everyone who knows that this city looks most beautiful from below—that is, from the water.
Bern Souvenirs in Photo Format
I lived in the Matte district for years, and now my studio and poster shop are on Münstergasse—Bern’s Old Town is my home and my daily source of inspiration. My posters are Bern souvenirs that don’t smell like a duty-free shop, but rather like the end of the workday and the air of the Aare. Even Goethe was impressed by the most laid-back capital in the world:
It is the most beautiful we have seen, built in a uniform, middle-class style, all of soft, grayish sandstone; the sense of equality and cleanliness inside is very comforting, especially since one feels that nothing is mere decoration or a product of despotism.
Swimming in the Aare River in Bern, surfing in Thun, swimming in Lake Biel
The Aare has me. It’s had me for a long time—and I’ve stopped resisting the call of the Aare’s sirens. Whether it’s swimming in the Aare in Bern, surfing in Thun, or swimming in Lake Biel (into which the Aare flows): the delightful refreshment of the water needs and wants no lengthy explanation. What matters is the sunlight glistening on the water’s surface. And the promise of cool relief that the water offers you if you dare to jump in.
Inspiration while hiking in the Bernese Oberland
So the Niesen poster is proof that sometimes the most productive decision is simply to set out. The Jungfrau - Top of Europe poster also came about because I chose hiking in the Bernese Oberland over working in the studio.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
As a Bern-based graphic designer and professional Bern city walker, I maintain that my Bern posters are the most authentic Bern souvenir you can find—offering unexpected perspectives on the city. 100% made in Bern, from design to print (in sizes ranging from A1 to F4). If you’re looking for something smaller, you’ll also find postcards, stickers, and—yes, even fridge magnets—at my poster shop on Münstergasse.
Gifts for everyone who has fallen for Bern's charm. Bern's bestsellers are the "Aareschwimmen" and "Fyrabe" (end-of-workday) posters.
The easiest way is through my online shop—it’s always open, even at midnight on Sundays. If you’d rather stop by in person, you can buy the Bern posters at my poster shop on Münstergasse, one of Bern’s most beautiful streets. If you happen to walk past Chat Noir on Marktgasse, you’ll also find them there in the poster shop.
We Bernese are often accused of being slow—and I take that as a compliment. Those who walk slowly see more. My “My Bern” posters are created while I’m strolling along the Aare River or through the Lower Old Town of Bern—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and my daily commute.
The journey from a stroll to a finished poster is long, winding, and always takes me through my studio on Münstergasse. The posters are printed at Uldry—a long-established family-run business in Bern that produces them exactly as I envision them.
